Research fields: Early-type stars, close binaries, Be stars, astronomical techniques. 1965 graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, Prague. Since 1966 in Stellar Department of the Astronomical Institute. 1977 PhD in Astrophysics. 1981-1989 Head of the Working Group 2m Telescope, 1990-2000 and since 2004 Head of the Stellar Department. Since 2000 Head of the Working Group Physics of Hot Stars. Since 1990 member of the Council of Sciences of the Astronomical Institute. In 1972 promoting systematic photoelectric observations at the joint Czech-Yugoslav Observatory, Hvar (now Croatia). Responsible for two upgrades of the 2m telescope (1982-87, 1996-98). Observational stays at Observatoire de Haute Provence, France, KPNO USA, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Victoria and David Dunlap Observatory, Canada. In recent years continued study of Be stars and rapid variability in early type stars.
